Dr. Druhan began her teaching career while in high school. Her band director, Jimmie Reynolds, would drive her to the nearby elementary school once a week to work with beginning clarinet students. She continued to teach throughout graduate school. While in the doctoral program at LSU, Dr. Druhan started teaching for the university as a graduate student, later as a Professional in Residence, and finally as an Instructor. While there, she also taught clarinet lessons and ensembles for the Honors Chamber Winds Camps under the direction of Frank Wickes and Linda Moorhouse.
While a member of the Army Band in Washington D.C., she was hired as an Adjunct Professor of clarinet for James Madison University. She worked with Dr. Janice Minor and was responsible for teaching freshmen music majors. It was the following year that Dr. Druhan was hired to teach at TAMU-Commerce.
Since arriving in Commerce, Mary has taught courses in music literature, clarinet literature, clarinet pedagogy, woodwind methods, ear training, freshmen success, and chamber music. Projects started by Dr. Druhan include "Winds in Focus: a Pedagogical Newsletter for Woodwinds," Woodwind Day 2003, the Annual Northeast Texas Clarinet Day, the Texas Clarinet Colloquium, and Triforia Winds. She has taught for band camps and for Junior/Senior Honor Band and has been a guest artist for many area events as both a lecturer and performer.
Dr. Druhan has also taught for the Clarinet Solutions summer clarinet camp in Allen, TX and for the Dallas Wind Symphony Summer Music Institute in Dallas. In addition to being an adjudicator throughout the state of Texas, she was the selector for the Texas all-state etudes (2005) and presented the etudes in a clinic for the Texas Bandmaster’s Association. Recently she served as an adjudicator for the Young Artist Competition for the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest 2008.
